In March of 1861 Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard was placed in charge of the Confederate troops at Charleston, South Carolina.

Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard was a graduate of the United States Military Academy. He was an inventor, writer, and Battle tactician who was the first prominent leader of the newly gathered Confederate Army.
