More people will have seen a lunar eclipse than a solar eclipse.

When the Sun, Earth, and Moon align so that the Moon is in the Earth's shadow, it is known as a total lunar eclipse. Because the Earth is larger than the Moon, this event can be seen during the eclipse from the nightside of the Earth.

When all three celestial bodies are in alignment and the Moon is near enough to the Earth to completely cover the Sun's disc, a total solar eclipse takes place. The Moon's shadow tracks are only a few hundred kilometers wide at most, and an eclipse can only be seen when it is inside the track.

A total solar eclipse is only visible to a larger population when its path of totality crosses over a major city, which is not very often. Most total solar eclipses are only visible in remote locations, such as mid-ocean and near the poles.

Areas outside the path of totality can witness a partial eclipse.

As an eclipse chaser, I have witnessed ten total solar eclipses, and they are truly amazing events. However, getting to the right place at the right time requires some advance planning; cruise ships will occasionally adjust their schedules to include the eclipse's center line, which is frequently the best place to see an eclipse.
