Though science is gradually working through these issues, a working fusion reactor is still many years away. Until recently, scientists could only produce a demonstration of fusion in which the reaction released more energy than had to be put into the process that created the reaction.
Thus, while we have been using fission successfully for many years from a practical standpoint, the construction of a feasible fusion reactor seems to still be a long way off due to its numerous inherent issues.
