The main technological advancements that we require are to get the colonists to Mars. The current journey takes several years, during which the colonists would require radiation protection and supplies. This time can be shortened with the development of better propulsion systems.
Given enough funding, it is possible that we could establish a colony on Mars in about 20 years. Space Agencies, including NASA, are researching the technologies required to establish a colony on Mars. The International Space Station (ISS) is playing an important role in this research.

Due to its proximity, similar day length, and availability of water ice, Mars is the most likely planet to be colonized.
