Where is the Oort Cloud located and what do we believe comes from it?

Answer 1

The Oort Cloud is believed to be a giant spherical shell surrounding the Sun, planets, and Kuiper Belt Objects.

The Oort Cloud is located far beyond Pluto and the furthest reaches of the Kuiper Belt. Unlike our solar system, which is thought to be surrounded by a giant spherical shell that is encircling the Sun, planets, and Kuiper Belt Objects, the Oort Cloud is thought to be a giant spherical shell that is thicker than a bubble and contains icy bodies that can occasionally be larger than mountains.

At a distance of approximately 100,000 AU (2 ly), the Oort Cloud is thought to encircle the Sun in a spherical cloud of mostly icy planetesimals. This places it in interstellar space, outside the Sun's Heliosphere, where it delineates the cosmological boundary between the Solar System and the region of the Sun's gravitational dominance.

The following link provides an excellent graphical depiction of its location: https://tutor.hix.ai

The Oort Cloud is spherically shaped, with an outer cloud and an inner cloud that is shaped like a doughnut, called a torus. The inner limits of the cloud start at roughly 2,000 AU from the Sun. The cloud itself extends nearly 25% of the way to the nearest star, Proxima Centauri. You can view a 3D type graphic of the cloud here: https://tutor.hix.ai

Answer 2

Stretching from roughly 2,000 to 200,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, the Oort Cloud is the furthest point in the solar system and is thought to be the parent of comets with orbital periods ranging from 200 years to thousands or even millions of years.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
