Longer chain hydrocarbons, particularly diesel fuel, have the ability to partially burn and release particulate matter and carbon monoxide:

#C_10H_22 + 14O_2 rarr 8CO_2 + CO + C + 11H_2O#

Trucks, which almost always have diesel engines, have sooty exhausts for this reason among others.

A portion of the gasoline burns in internal combustion engines as well, producing soot and carbon monoxide.
