When is the urban heat island effect most likely to occur?

Answer 1

During summer time, especially.

In spite of the reduced amount of sunlight, cities are warmer (due to the urban heat island concept) than surrounding areas for two reasons: increased heat production (traffic, industrial processes, and fossil fuel consumption) and decreased rate of heat loss due to the abundance of building and paving materials, which act as solar collectors. In general, urban areas have at least ten times more particulate matter in their air than that of surrounding areas.

In some European cities, like Barcelona, Madrid, Athens, etc., summertime heat islands are the cause of numerous deaths.

The urban heat island effect is primarily caused by land surface modification, and it is most noticeable in the summer and winter (Mark Vogan Weather, 2017).
