When do covalent bonds form?

Answer 1

When two or more non-metals bond.

Covalent bonds form when two or more non-metals bond. The non-metal elements perfer to share electrons instead of one gaining and one losing (ionic bonding). The difference in electronegativity for non-metal elements is NOT large enough for one compound to gain full control of the electrons. The sharing of electrons is benificial for reaching a full octect, allowing them to become more stable than in their elemental form.

Answer 2

When atoms share electron pairs in order to reach a stable configuration, covalent bonds are formed; this usually happens when nonmetal atoms bond with other nonmetal atoms.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
