What is the function of chiral compounds in medicine?

Answer 1

A drug molecule must have the right chirality to match the corresponding shape in a biological molecule and have the desired effect.

Because biological molecules are chiral, the way that drugs work depends on how well their shapes match those of biological molecules.

Similar to trying to fit a left hand into a right-handed glove, a drug with the incorrect chirality may not fit.

Nearly 90% of the drugs on the market today are 50:50 mixtures of enantiomers, and more than half of them are chiral compounds.

The body responds to each enantiomer differently and interacts with it in different ways.

As a result, while one isomer may have the intended effects, the other may be inert or even have the opposite effect.

Three categories of racemic medications exist:

Chiral compounds in medicine are used because they can interact selectively with biological targets due to their asymmetric structure, enhancing efficacy and reducing side effects.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
