What were the circumstances of President Richard Nixon's resignation from office?

Answer 1

The Watergate Scandal.

To be fair to Nixon, his presidency was doomed from the start as the Vietnam War turned against the United States. The country, and college students in particular, despised the war, which was tearing apart American soldiers' families and morale at an alarming rate.

Nixon's unpopularity as president resulted from his decision to keep sending troops to Vietnam against the wishes of the majority of Americans, making his reelection difficult.

Prior to my explanation of the Watergate Scandal, keep in mind that Nixon never admitted to knowing about the incident, and there is scant reliable evidence to support that claim.

Members of Nixon's reelection committee broke into the Democratic National Committee's headquarters in the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. in the evening hours of June 17, 1972. Since Nixon was a Republican and would be facing a Democrat in the election, this building housed the Democratic Party's headquarters. Their goal was to obtain classified documents and wiretap phones in order to give the Republicans a significant advantage in the coming election (since they would be aware of the Democrat's strategy).

But when this plot was uncovered, the media put tremendous pressure on Nixon. It was also revealed that Nixon had paid the thieves money to remain silent. The scandal had a devastating impact and made the already unpopular president look even more unpopular. Had Nixon not resigned, Congress would have most likely impeached him or removed him from office.
