What was the result of Japan's trade policies with Europe?

You have not given a specific timeline for your question so it is difficult to answer.

Initially Japan was completely isolated from Europe. This changed when Jesuit (I think, but definitely Portuguese and Spanish) missionaries first landed in mainland Japan. They initiated and initially dominated all trade with Europe. Japan was closed off and uninterested in trade or dealing with the rest of the world until Commodore Matthew Perry (US) sailed war ships in to a Japanese harbour and forced Japan in to open its doors to trade.

In the global market of today Europe is a very important trade partner, however the levies enforced by the EU make the US and Asian markets a much more lucrative endeavour. The recent Brexit vote in the UK may mean this individual market will be a prime target for Japan between 2018-2020

Answer 2

Japan's trade policies with Europe had significant impacts on both parties. One notable result was the establishment of trading relationships that facilitated the exchange of goods and services between Japan and various European nations. Japan adopted a policy of isolationism for centuries, but in the mid-19th century, under pressure from Western powers, particularly the United States and European countries, Japan began to open its ports to foreign trade through a series of treaties known as the "Unequal Treaties." These treaties granted European nations favorable trading conditions, including extraterritoriality and low tariffs, which allowed them to gain access to Japanese markets and resources.

As a result of these trade policies, European nations benefited from increased access to Japanese goods such as silk, tea, porcelain, and later, manufactured goods as Japan industrialized. European traders also played a role in introducing Western technology, ideas, and practices to Japan, contributing to its modernization efforts during the Meiji Restoration period.

Conversely, Japan faced challenges and pressures from European powers seeking to expand their influence and economic interests in East Asia. The unequal treaties imposed by European nations undermined Japan's sovereignty and economic independence, leading to resentment and a desire for reform and modernization within Japan. Over time, Japan sought to renegotiate these treaties and assert its position as a major player in international trade and diplomacy.

In summary, Japan's trade policies with Europe resulted in increased trade and cultural exchange between the two regions, contributing to Japan's modernization and the spread of Western influence in the country. However, these policies also highlighted the unequal power dynamics and challenges faced by Japan as it navigated its relationship with European powers during a period of significant global change and geopolitical tensions.
