What strong leaders worked to unify Japan in the late 1500's?
The main three are Oda Nobunaga, Tokagawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi .
It began with one warlord, Oda Nobunaga who opposed a much larger force and won. This led to his beginning to unify Japan, one fief at a time, but he was betrayed by one of his samurai. He committed suicide in 1582.
Nobunaga's lands were claimed by Akechi Mitsuhide, the man who betrayed him, but he was soon defeated by Nobunaga's most able general Hideyoshi. Hideyoshi then went about the task of unifying Japan. Over the next several years he succeeded in unifying Japan, however, he could never assume the title of Shogun since he did not meet the requirements (he did not belong to one of the three royal families). He had to settle for being the kampaku (imperial regent). His rule, however, was absolute until his death.
After Hideyoshi died of poor health, it became apparent what the main difference between being Shogun and being kampaku was. The legitimacy of his heir was challenged and in a short time he was deposed.
Tokagawa Ieyasu was Nobunga's and Hideyoshi's ally through all of this. However he did meet all the requirements to be Shogun. He waited until Hideyoshi's death before making his move. In 1600 he deposed Hideyoshi's heir and established his hereditary shogunate that would last until 1867.
There are a few interesting sayings involving these 3 and about the era. In terms of their personalities and rising to power there is a saying,
"What do you do if the bird won't sing?" Nobunaga: "Kill it." Hideyoshi: " Make it want to sing." Ieyasu: "Wait."
In terms of the era they say "Nobunaga pounds the national rice cake, Hideyoshi kneads it, and in the end Ieyasu sits down and eats it."

Two strong leaders who worked to unify Japan in the late 1500s were Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Nobunaga initiated the unification process through military conquests and political maneuvering, but it was Hideyoshi who completed the unification after Nobunaga's death. Hideyoshi continued Nobunaga's policies and expanded his territory, eventually bringing most of Japan under his control by the end of the 16th century.
