What shortage did colonies face as a result of dwindling native populations from disease?

Answer 1

The colonists faced a labor shortage, as well as a shortage of food production.

The Jamestown colony benefited indirectly from the food trade that the early settlers had with the Native Americans; disease had reduced the tribes' population, meaning there was less food for the Native Americans to trade with the colonists; furthermore, trade for food was hindered by conflict and warfare with the tribes.

An alternative to enslavement was the practice of indentured servants, in which impoverished individuals from England exchanged their seven years of life for a ticket to America. The issue was that many of these individuals fled to establish their own homes before completing the seven-year term.

The other option was to enslave Africans, since Black African Slaves were unable to fit in with the local population. Slaves were employed to produce food and to fill labor shortages.
