Theme is the writer's message about life, whereas plot describes the main events and sequence of a story.

A key difference is that themes are often short and can be said in one sentence, whereas the plot of a story can be lengthy. Themes are a relationship between the story and life- essentially an extension of the story and how the events can be applicable in real life. Simply put, plots just describe the story.
