He married a princess from the Byzantine Empire that bordered his kingdom. Converting to the Orthodox religion was a requirement for the marriage. After Vladimir was baptized he then required all the people in his kingdom to also be baptized.
After the reign of Vladimir Russian Kiev was an Orthodox Christian nation. Vladimir was key in bringing Christianity to Kiev.
