Outside the home their opportunities were extremely limited.

American women who had worked on New England farms became surplus labor during the industrial revolution of the 1820s and 1830s. The newly constructed textile mills in Lowell, Massachusetts, found this labor pool and invited women to work in their mills; similar events occurred in other states.

One of Susan B. Anthony's main grievances about the status of women when she launched the women's suffrage movement in 1840 was that the only other occupations that accepted women were retail sales and teaching.
