What is the primary function of the pituitary gland?

Answer 1

Primary function of pituitary is to produce critical hormones.

The pituitary gland is part of the endocrine system.

What are the three sections of the gland?

The three sections that are in the pituitary gland are,

  • Anterior
  • Intermediate
  • Posterior

The anterior lobe is mainly involved in development of the body, sexual maturation, and reproduction. This lobe secretes growth hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotrophic hormone, prolactin, and at least two types of gonadotrophic hormones.

The intermediate lobe of the pituitary gland releases a hormone that stimulates the melanocytes.

The posterior lobe produces antidiuretic hormone, which reclaims water from the kidneys and conserves it in the bloodstream to prevent dehydration. This lobe also secretes child birth hormone, oxytocin.

Okay, This is all good. But, what does the gland look like?

The pituitary gland is a pea-sized structure located at the base of the brain, just below the hypothalamus, to which it is attached via nerve fibers.
