The part of a leaf where most photosynthesis takes place is the palisade mesophyll , also called the palisade parenchyma.

The mesophyll consists of the middle portion of the leaf. The palisade mesophyll consists of cells packed together and rich in chloroplasts. Eighty percent of photosynthesis occurs in the palisade mesophyll. The cells of the spongy mesophyll are loosely packed so gases can diffuse into and out of the spongy and palisade mesophyll. The cells of the spongy mesophyll have chloroplasts, but there are fewer cells and a much lower rate of photosynthesis.
