Of course, it is irrelevant if hydroelectric power is considered a renewable energy source because building a dam requires finding a river in a location that can support one, building the dam itself requires an enormous amount of resources, including concrete, and waiting for the dam to fill has a significant environmental impact. The question of damming a wild river in Tasmania was hotly debated many years ago in my own country; the dam was never constructed, and the river still flows through a very untamed and inaccessible area.
