The active site

An excellent way to remember this is to picture the active site of the enzyme as a lock and key, where the substrate is the key and the active site of the enzyme is the lock. Just as you can't just stick your car key into the lock on your front door and expect it to work, the same is true for enzymes. The area that the substrate binds to is called the active site of the enzyme. Only one substrate will fit into it. Additionally, keep in mind that the enzyme can be reused after each reaction (many people tend to forget that so that's just a small tip to remember).
