A red giant's lifetime varies with its starting mass. Generally speaking, low to intermediate mass stars such as the Sun will remain red giants for a few million to a billion years before evolving into a planetary nebula and then into a white dwarf. High-mass stars can become red giants more quickly, perhaps only spending a few hundred thousand years in this phase.
