As the most energy-intensive and challenging of the three sustainability options, RECYCLING is really the last resort. It does help reduce waste by using it as a resource for new products.
The practical challenge for sustainable ecology and society is to strike a balance between the generation of waste and the uses of resources, so that there is no net accumulation of waste (which may not even be possible in theory because of the second law of thermodynamics, which states that entropy is always increasing).
