What is the function of the cartilage rings in the trachea?

Answer 1

The tracheal cartilages help support the trachea while still allowing it to move and flex during breathing.

A sequence of cartilaginous rings called C-shaped cartilage rings are arranged along the length of the trachea and stabilize it, keeping it rigid and preventing it from collapsing in the event of an air shortage. These rings also protect the trachea by allowing it to expand in length during respiration.

Strong yet pliable tissue, cartilage is composed of 16–20 individual C-shaped cartilages that are stacked one atop the other and open at the point where the trachea is closest to the oesophagus.
