Proper selection and use of biofuels can be more sustainable environmentally than use of fossil fuels.

Efficiency is a ratio of energy input to energy output, and because of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, it is always less than 1.0 for ANY system. Other factors, like impacts on other facets of society or the environment, may also be taken into consideration. Given the complexity of the problem, there isn't really a single "efficiency" solution.

A good example is ethanol, whose production involves a lot of energy input, produces a lot of emissions, and frequently affects other beneficial societal factors, like the availability of food. Therefore, comparing the "end product" use of ethanol to gasoline, for instance, does not assess the fuel's sustainability or efficiency.

The entire "lifecycle" of numerous so-called "hydrogen economy" mechanisms has comparable problems.

Having said that, there are a number of benefits associated with specific forms of biofuel production and application. For example, oils and fuels originating from non-food plants can be cultivated in regions unsuitable for food crops; additionally, the utilization and collection of biogas produced from waste that is produced regardless of its use can significantly enhance the "sustainability" of the original materials lifecycles.

Always consider the full lifecycle when comparing energy options, including the energy and equipment required to produce it, the energy itself, any waste products (which are inevitable), and any potential effects on other environmental and social factors.
