What is the coldest place in the universe?

Answer 1

The Boomerang Nebula is the coldest place we have found.

Apart from experiments in which we have artificially generated temperatures a tiny fraction above #0K#, (which would make the coldest place in the universe somewhere in Helsinki), the answer is probably the Boomerang Nebula, located about #5000# light years away in the constellation of Centaurus.
The rapidly expanding gas around the star system has caused the temperature to drop from the more normal background temperature of #2.7K# or so to about the #1K# mark.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
