What is ozonolysis and its applications?

Ozonolysis is a redox reaction involving #"O"_3# and alkenes. An important application is the synthesis of ketones.

In the presence of oxidising agents, alkenes can turn into alcohols, aldehydes, ketones or carboxylic acids.

In ozonolysis, ozone (#"O"_3#) is bubbled through a solution of the alkene in methanol at −78 °C, until the solution turns blue (which is due to excess unreacted ozone).

The intermediate formed at the end of the ozonolysis reaction is called an ozonide. To obtain the ketone/aldehyde products, zinc or dimethyl sulfide (reducing agent) is added.
