Nucleo-synthesis is the process of creating atomic nuclei heavier than hydrogen.
Nucleo = Nuclei
Synthesis = joining, merging.

In the early days of the Universe there were only protons, neutrons and electrons. Nucleo-synthesis is required to make the heavier elements.

Soon after the Big Bang, the so called "Big Bang Nucleo-synthesis" took place which created helium and traces of lithium and beryllium.

In modern times nucleo-synthesis takes place in stars, supernovae and cosmic ray interactions.

The process of nucleosynthesis, which forms elements in star cores through nuclear reactions, is connected to the Big Bang theory, which holds that the universe started out as a hot, dense state from which all matter and energy expanded. In the early stages of the universe, only the lightest elements, like hydrogen and helium, were formed; however, as the universe cooled and expanded, heavier elements, like carbon, oxygen, and iron, were synthesized through nuclear reactions in stars and other cosmic processes. Over billions of years, this process of nucleosynthesis produced the variety of chemical elements that are observed in the universe today.
