What is negative population growth?

Answer 1

A negative population growth rate occurs when the number of people/ species are reduced.

A rate is a ratio that enables us to compare two objects with different units of measure. To further clarify this point, let's quickly review population growth, which is defined as: an increase in the number of individuals in a population (be it humans, fish, birds, or even unicorns!).

A population growth rate can be defined as the rate at which a population increases over a specific period of time. This can be expressed mathematically as the difference between the population and the length of time, or the change in population divided by the length of time. The following expression should help.

Population growth rate= #(P(t2)-P(t1))/(P(t1)(t2-t1))#

The population at the end of the time period under consideration, the most recent time (the time closest to today), is equal to P(t2).

P(t1) is the population at the beginning of the relevant time, which is the time that is farthest from today.

The time difference is (t2-t1); in particular, (t2) is the date that is most distant from today, and (t1) is the date that is closest to today.

Keep in mind that the P before the parentheses denotes population; in the absence of the P, the (t)s stand for time.

Let's look at the population of my home state of California between 2000 and 2014 as an example:

P(t2): 39,000,000 individuals

P(t1): 34,000,000 individuals

(t2): 2014

(t1): The year 2000

Population growth rate= #(P(t2)-P(t1))/(P(t1)(t2-t1))#
= #(39-34)/((34)(2014-2000))#
=#(5)/((34)(14)#
=#(5)/((476))#
=#0.0105#

The population of California increased by 4.2% in four years. We can multiply this value by four (the number of years) to get the total percent increase over all four years. To get a percent, we multiply by 100 and get an annual increase in population of about 1.05%.

To put it more succinctly, a negative population growth happens when a species' population declines. Immigration and/or higher death rates than birth rates are two possible causes of this.

I appreciate your patience as I know this is lengthy and complicated.

Answer 2

Negative population growth occurs when the number of deaths and emigrants exceeds the number of births and immigrants in a given population over a specific period, resulting in an overall decline in the population size.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
