A stimulus must be strong enough to start an impulse in a sensory neuron, which then passes it to an intermediary neuron, which passes it to the appropriate motor neuron, which then sends the impulse to a gland or muscle. A general example of a reflex arc is pricking a finger with a needle, and the final action is withholding one's hand.
