Infectious mononucleosis ( glandular fever ) is an infection caused by the Epstein - Barr virus ( EPV) .

This infection mostly affects the tonsils; in young adults, symptoms include fever, sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. Skin rashes and spleen enlargement can also occasionally occur. In children, symptoms are minimal or nonexistent.

The main way that EPV, a member of the herpes virus family, is transmitted is through saliva.

Blood tests for particular antibodies and an increase in atypical blood lymphocytes can confirm the diagnosis, which is based on the patient's symptoms.
