Iceland benefits greatly from geothermal energy because the entire island is an active volcanic site. The problem is that most of the world isn't sitting on a volcano. The only significant drawback to geothermal energy is that it's actually only available in very select places.

In many cases, however, geothermal power plants can be very cost-effective, especially in areas where using coal, oil, or alternative energy sources like solar and wind is not practical. This brings us to our second minor criticism of geothermal energy: in some cases, the construction of geothermal power plants can be expensive.

Although there are only a few locations in the world where geothermal energy is available, the enormous advantages of geothermal energy clearly outweigh the drawbacks. However, one potentially very important source is located in the United States, where scientists have discovered a way to prevent the supervolcano that is Yellowstone National Park from erupting.

They discovered that injecting water into the volcano would both lessen the likelihood of an eruption and supply enough electricity to run the entire country—fully sustainable power that would fit neatly into the US budget. Nevertheless, precautions would need to be taken to ensure that our exploits would not in any way detract from Yellowstone's natural beauty.
