The environment changed dramatically when the giant asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago left behind small mammals that survived the calamity by hiding in burrows or other hiding places. Once the dust settled, the mammals filled in all the niches that the dinosaurs had occupied and thrived.

The second major environmental shift that directly affected humans occurred in East Africa about 2 million years ago. During this time, a drying out period forced our ancestors to emerge from the forests and attempt to survive in the dry grasslands. As a result, we most likely developed right-handed feet and toes, and maybe lost our body hair.
