What is a super-antigen?

Answer 1

Super antigens are a class of antigens that cause non specific activation of T-cells resulting in polyclonal T-cell activation and massive cytokine release.

Microbiological products known as super antigens possess the capacity to stimulate the immune system to a great extent.

Super antigens can activate as much as 20% of the body's T-cells, compared to the normal antigen-induced T-cell response, which activates approximately 0.001% of T-cells. Certain super antigens, such as Anti CD3 and AntiCD28, are very potent and can activate as much as 100% of T-cells.

Serious, potentially fatal symptoms such as hypotension, shock, organ failure, and even death can result from mass T-cell activation.

Answer 2

A superantigen is a type of antigen that activates a large number of T cells, leading to an exaggerated immune response. Unlike typical antigens, superantigens bypass the usual antigen presentation process and can cause excessive inflammation.
