Although a wide range of substances are capable of accepting electrons, metals are arguably the most "eager" to do so. As positively charged ions, or cations, metals take on electrons to counterbalance their positive charges.

For example, the sodium cation #Na^+# would accept an electron (#e^-#) in order to cancel out its #+1# charge. Likewise, the Barium cation, #Ba^(2+)# would accept electrons as well (in this case, #2 e^-#) to cancel out its #+2# charge.
