Some atomic nuclei are not stable. These are radioactive and emit radiation. Even though all elements having more than 83 protons are naturally radioactive ones, it is possible to produce (artificially) unstable isotopes (these are called radionuclides) of virtually every element.

The three types of radiation are alpha, beta and gamma radiation. All of these types of radiation are dangerous to living creatures.
