A dwarf galaxy is a small galaxy that contains fewer stars, less mass, and lower luminosity compared to larger galaxies like the Milky Way. These galaxies typically have diameters ranging from a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of light-years. Dwarf galaxies can be further classified into two main types: dwarf elliptical galaxies, which have an ellipsoidal shape and little to no star formation activity, and dwarf irregular galaxies, which have irregular shapes and often exhibit ongoing star formation. Dwarf galaxies are abundant in the universe and are often found orbiting larger galaxies as satellites.
