Denitrification is the process by which nitrites or nitrates are reduced to produce nitrogen gas.

Denitrification is a process within the nitrogen cycle.

It is sort of the opposite of nitrogen fixation in the sense that it undoes the results of nitrogen fixation. It is carried out largely by denitrifying bacteria.
