What functional group improves the solubility of molecules?

Answer 1

You have to specify the solvent.

While propanol is somewhat soluble in water, methanol and ethanol are infinitely miscible with it, organic molecules would be more soluble in water if they contained an hydroxyl group, or if they were alcohols.

However, methanol is insoluble in hexanes due to the water-like nature of the methanol molecule, which prevents hexanes from solubilizing it. In contrast, ethanol is soluble in hexanes.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
