James Chadwick, as stated by PhysicsLab Online, was tasked with finding evidence of Rutherford's theoretical, tightly bound "proton-electron pair." Chadwick's experiment revealed this was a different subatomic particle, which is now known as the neutron.

It was first believed that the highly energetic radiation stream that was released by bombarding Beryllium with alpha particles in 1930 was gamma radiation.

Subsequent research on the characteristics of this radiation produced inconsistent findings: similar to gamma rays, these rays were very invasive and neutral because they did not discharge charged electroscopes (the photoelectric effect) when they passed through a magnetic field.

Heisenberg then proposed the proton-neutron model for the nucleus after Chadwick announced in 1932 that this particle was Rutherford's neutron, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1935.
