What event started the Spanish-American War?

Answer 1

It was started by the attack on the USS Maine on the 15th of February in 1898.

The USS Maine was lost in the Havana Harbor which served as a pretext to start a war with Spain(Cuba being the last Spanish colony).

The Yellow Press embodied by Hearst and Pulitzer criticized Spain very violently though no evidence was put forward to support their accusation.
