What ended Reconstruction in the South?

President Rutheford Hayes decided to end the occupation of the South by the military, he had them return to their barracks. He paved the way to segregation since it ended the civil advances that had been achieved.

The end of Reconstruction in the South was primarily influenced by several factors: political, social, and economic. The Compromise of 1877, which settled the disputed 1876 presidential election, led to the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, effectively ending Reconstruction. Additionally, the rise of white supremacist groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan, intimidated and oppressed African Americans, undermining their political and social progress. Furthermore, the economic downturn in the South, combined with the withdrawal of federal support, weakened the Reconstruction efforts, allowing former Confederate leaders to regain power and enforce discriminatory laws such as Jim Crow segregation.
