Changes in rain and heat waves

The Humbolt Current, which carries cold, low-salinity water from Antarctica and flows south-northeast, is the main current that flows along Peru's coast.

Other phenomena, dubbed "El Nino" (the baby boy) and "La Nina" (the baby girl), interact with this current.

El Nino usually begins in December, when unusually warm water builds up along the Peruvian coast. The name El Nino is derived from the celebration of Christmas, which Christians believe to be the birthdate of Jesus, son of God.

In contrast to other regions that will experience dryer-than-usual conditions, Peru, the Gulf of Mexico, and several southern US states will see a significant increase in precipitation (rain).

The reverse of El Nino, known as La Nina, causes colder-than-normal seas along the coast of Peru.

El Nino and La Nina are components of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which affects rainfall and temperature globally as well as in Peru.
