What does a spectrograph help astronomers to determine?

A preliminary assessment of general color enables us to group stars. Dark lines in the spectrogram indicate individual elements, so we can infer information about the composition of stars, such as the ratio of hydrogen to helium and other elements, which provides an estimate of the "age" of a star.
