What causes chlorides in water?
There are several possible causes.
(1) by leaching out chlorides from the soil; (2) by chlorinating the water for safety; the process converts hypochlorite into chloride; and (3) by contaminating the water with seawater, which has a 3-4% chloride content. If a river's water intake point is relatively close to the sea, it may absorb additional chlorides during high tide.

Chlorides in water primarily result from the dissolution of salts containing chloride ions, such as sodium chloride. Industrial discharges, runoff from road de-icing, and natural geological processes can also contribute to elevated chloride levels in water.
