What causes a quasar for form?

A quasar forms when material falls into the accretion disc around a supermassive black hole at the centre of a galaxy.

Supermassive black holes are found at the centers of galaxies, including our own Milky Way galaxy. The supermassive black hole in Sagittarius A*, our galaxy, has a mass of approximately 4,000,000 times that of the sun. Other galaxies have much larger black holes.

If material falls into the accretion disc surrounding a supermassive black hole, it is heated by friction and gravitational forces to the point where it emits enormous amounts of energy, known as a quasar. An accretion disc is a disc of material falling into a body such as a black hole.

A supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy with a large amount of material falling into it is necessary for the formation of quasars; this usually happens in young galaxies and when galaxies collide.

The observed quasars are seen as they would have appeared in the early universe and are located in young galaxies millions or billions of light years away.

Our galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy collide in about 4 billion years, and if the supermassive black holes at the center of the galaxies merge, there may be enough material left over to form a quasar.
