A number of factors put agricultural soils at risk include physical degradation brought on by urban sprawl and erosion-induced loss of upper soil layers.

Soil conservation (through legislation and erosion control) is a solution to these problems.

Some soils are contaminated because of the widespread use of chemicals (such as pesticides, fumigants, or other biocides). Chemical use needs to be minimized, and if at all feasible, it should be completely stopped (please read Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring").

Controlling this issue is also important because some soils lose their fertility because of biological activity. Soils lose their biological activity (such as nutrient loss) when unfavorable conditions exist.

To protect agricultural soils, society needs to be more informed; people should purchase and favor organic food over industrial food; they should research the origins of food and the conditions under which it is grown and processed.

It is not advisable for people to purchase homes constructed on agricultural land, even if these areas were fertile a few years ago. There are additional worries as well: the world's population is currently 7 billion and 455 million (as of February 20, 2018), and it is growing. If it reaches 9 billion (roughly in the 2050s), it will be extremely difficult to locate agricultural soils to feed this population.

Society can reverse agricultural soil pollution through implementing sustainable agricultural practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and reduced tillage.
