Groundwater pollution originates from domestic sources, such as houses, and is a result of septic tanks. A lot of chemicals, such as detergents, shampoos, and cosmetics, are used in homes and can contaminate groundwater through septic tanks.

Another issue is oil tanks, which can leak underground. The chemicals found in these tanks, such as benzoene and toluene, do not break down readily when they enter groundwater and are difficult to treat.

Groundwater contamination from industrial areas can also occur. The movie Civil Action discusses this problem. Agricultural chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, etc.) are a nonpoint source of groundwater pollution.
