Ribosomes are bound to the endoplasmic reticulum, creating rough endoplasmic reticulum in eukaryotes, while in prokaryotes ribosomes are distributed in the matrix of cell.

The two types of ribosomes are free ribosomes and bound ribosomes. Free ribosomes synthesize proteins that function within the cytosol, while bound ribosomes synthesize proteins that are either inserted into membranes, exported from the cell, or used within certain organelles.
