Lava or magma can cool and solidify to form crystals, which is one way that minerals form (the process of atoms forming a material with a crystal structure is called crystallization).

The formation of amethyst is an example of this process; deep below the surface, magma cools slowly enough to give it time to form large crystals in regular patterns.

Second, solutions are formed when one substance dissolves uniformly in a liquid; elements and compounds that leave the solution can crystallize. For instance, when magma heats water below the surface, surrounding rock's elements and compounds will dissolve in the water, forming a solution; if that solution seeps into rock cracks, the elements and compounds will leave the solution when the water cools, crystallizing and forming minerals inside the rock, known as veins.

Evaporation is another process that leads to solution crystallization; when a liquid in a solution evaporates, crystals will form from the components that are "left behind." For example, salt crystals are left behind when ocean (salt) water evaporates.
