The subatomic particles in an atom are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, are located in the nucleus, and have a mass of approximately 1 atomic mass unit (amu). Neutrons have no charge, are also located in the nucleus, and have a mass of approximately 1 amu. Protons and neutrons are tightly packed together in the nucleus, while electrons occupy regions of space around the nucleus in various energy levels or orbitals.
